Brown County 2012!

The whole crew (minus little John Vlach, who was napping)!
We had another great reunion with my best college girlfriends and their families!  Once again we all met up in Brown County, IN and stayed at a big log cabin that fits our group of 17 (and that number seems to inch up every year!).  With 8 adults and 9 kids, we are finally outnumbered!  The kids have so much fun together and all get along so well.  This year the hot tub was a big hit - the kids went "swimming" many times each day.  They also passed their time going on hikes, looking for bugs, and walking to the farm next door to catch a glimpse of the cows (and one day, we even ended up with a huge wandering cow in our front yard!).  When playing inside, they were entertained with dance parties, playing dress-up, and checking out each others' toys.  Cassidy and Gavin were so sad to leave when the 4 days were up!  Of course we adults had our share of good times too, making large group meals together, chatting and laughing late into the evenings, and checking out the scene in nearby Nashville, IN.  It's a trip I look forward to year after year!

Great fun rolling down the hill (although not as fun later when all the kids had weird rashes and scrapes!)

Superheros Unite!

Some pictures just bring an instant smile to my face - this is one of them!  Gavin has gotten into superheros lately and likes to put on their various costumes.  Cassidy and Daddy were happy to join in the fun.  I just love it and wanted to share!

Easter 2012

We had a wonderful Easter Sunday this year.  The kids woke up to find their Easter baskets and hidden eggs, courtesy of the Easter Bunny, and then we went to a lovely morning service at church.  Afterwards, we headed out to Grammy and Grandpa Brown's house for another fun Easter egg hunt in the backyard and a great day spent with family.
Good Morning!!!
"The Land Before Time" dinosaur puppets from Grandma and Grandpa Reder were a huge hit!

Easter Preparations!

We had fun preparing for the Easter Bunny, as always!  We hard-boiled eggs and the kids had fun coloring and decorating them (never got around to actually eating them - oh well).  We also went to one of Wilmette's Easter festivities, the Linden Square Bunny Hop.  This was such a fun morning with live bunnies to pet, a visit from the fire truck for the kids to climb on, treats from each store on the square, and best of all was a visit from the Easter Bunny.  I snapped a shot of the kids standing with him, and had no idea that the photographer from our local paper stood right behind me and snapped the same photo.  How fun to open the paper the following week to see the kids' pictures in the paper with the Easter Bunny!  We also tried out a new recipe for "bunny bait" - a popcorn treat that you leave out for the Easter Bunny the night before Easter.  It was fun to make (messy fun!), however it sounded better than it actually tasted.  Oh well.  The Easter Bunny ate his portion, so that's all that mattered!

I just had to include this.  Such a typical scene in our house these days.

More to come soon on our actual Easter Sunday celebration - it was a lovely day!

Gavin Turns 3!

What fun we had celebrating Gavin's 3rd birthday!  We had a wonderful get-together with family.  Grammy and Grandpa Brown and the Tieman family all came over for brunch and cake.  We were lucky to have a bright sunny day, so we played in the backyard together and tried out one of Gavin's gifts (a fun stomp rocket!).  Gavin also had a special day at pre-school for his birthday.  I got to join his class for snacktime to help them sing him happy birthday, and he wore a special birthday crown.  He took such pride in telling me how things were done there - he showed me where to throw my napkin away and how to push in my chair.  Such a big boy.

Time sure flies, and we can't believe little Gavin is 3 years old!  We love you, Gavin!

February in Florida

We headed south to Florida for the first part of February and had a great visit. We started off visiting Grandma and Grandpa Reder in The Villages, FL (near Orlando), their new permanent home now that they've retired. We had a great time! Nearly every day was sunny and comfortable, so we spent plenty of time outside. We went swimming at their neighborhood pool, took fun golf cart rides, played at the park, and went for strolls through the square. We had some nice meals out and even did some dancing on the square in the evening. Here's some video footage that I'm sure the kids will love for us to pull out for their friends when they're older:

We were so glad to spend this great time with Grandma and Grandpa Reder and will miss them dearly until we get together again this summer!
Our next stop was Disney World's Magic Kingdom. What fun! We made it to all the kids' favorite rides and attractions - the spinning teacups, the magic carpet ride, the peter pan ride, it's a small world, the buzz lightyear adventure, etc. We also stopped for lunch at Cinderella's Castle and chatted with Cassidy's favorite princesses. Cassidy even wore her Cinderella costume so she could fit right in. She still talks about how Ariel called her a "cute little guppy." Later in the day, we stumbled upon a Tinkerbell meet-n-greet, which was also a big hit. We kept the fun going all the way to the 8pm fireworks show, which I have to say was really impressive. Many fun memories wee made throughout our day, for sure. And it was all going so well, until...

We got in the car around 9pm to start our drive down to Pompano Beach, our final stop on this trip. About an hour into the 3-hour drive, with both kids fast asleep in the back seat, poor Gavin got sick. Vomiting, crying hysterically...so we frantically found the nearest truck stop and cleaned him up and grabbed the essentials in the convenience store to get us through the remainder of the drive. Thankfully, he fell back asleep and we made it the rest of the way to the beach, pulling in about 1:30am. We spent the next 3 days doing our best to enjoy the beach, despite Gavin's flu and the unfortunate rainy weather we encountered. Some of our favorite activities were getting into the ocean (we had 1 sunny afternoon!) and the pool, going to Butterfly World and Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, and enjoying a nice dinner out where the kids behaved so nicely with their coloring books on the inner side of our booth that it almost felt like Erik and I were on a date! We returned home with Gavin feeling much better and with lots of really great memories to look back on!
